MATT LUBE: BASS GUITAR Playing piano as a child, I was always a fan of music. My "Big Four" so to speak in high school were ACDC, Triumph, Rush and Judas Priest. Definitely started out with hard rock and heavy metal that's for sure. In college, through the influence of my dear friend Carson Wade "Trey" Gregory III, I became enamored with such bands as REM, Ben Folds Five, Joe Jackson and Oingo Boingo. Later on, after months on end of listening to nothing but the band CAKE from Sacramento CA, I re discovered Cracker and their family of talented musicians and suddenly there was a reason to plug in my electric bass and play, which for years was basically a piece of art in my home. Influences and admirations are extensive, but Cracker / Camper Van Beethoven , Johnny Hickman and his sidekick Jim Dalton (and let's not forget the Railbenders), David Lowery, Victor Krummenacher, Ike Reilly, Jason Isbell and the passionate songwriting of Roger Clyne deserve special mention. Those guys and their work ethic, song writing, professionalism and admiration for fans like myself are truly an inspiration. Other elder influences include The WHO, The Beatles, and a host of other classic rock icons. I have also recently been enamoured by everything Chris Cornell - Soundgarden, Audioslave, and all of his so-lo stuff - what a talent and loss to the music community. ALSO - I am forever grateful to my dear friends, the crumbs, who have turned me onto countless masters of rock and other indie artists. I only wish I would have met Jim Hostetler 20 years ago, because his catalog of music is second to none !! That said, all of who I am wouldn't be possible without my biggest fans, my mom and dad - and of course this bio would never be complete without mentioning my wife Kelly and my kids Jack, Charlie, Claire and Anne Catherine.
I got together with Chad Smith and formed Redwax in the spring of 2011, and shortly thereafter Luke Elms joined the band as co-frontman and songwriter. Soon after we had a full band with drums and keys, eventually leading to the recording of "The Calm Before" in the spring of 2014. The band has been essentially dormant since the recording of that album mainly due to the fact that our professional lives and families take up a tremendous amount of our time. Luke and I have somehow managed to make it a point and squeeze in a couple of hours a week to fulfill our passion and work out new ideas and write and record demos. For us music is more than a hobby, it's a part of our lives, a part of us. I think many of our songs reflect that. To me the most rewarding part of being in the band is the creativity and the writing/recording of demos - and we have done a lot of that over the past few years. I love driving to work in the morning listening to we recorded the night before. Performing live is the ultimate, especially to fans that enjoy our music. I am very excited about this band.
